Most of the times we don't spend too much to time to our car engines. Engine needs to look after from time to time and they need regular maintenance to keep them in good running condition. Taking attention to engine needs will prevent future problems. We've put together some list on how to take care of your engine.
1. Change the oil regularly.
This is the most important things you can do to your engine. Oil keeps vital parts well lubricated to avoid overheating. Your engine wont function without it, and if you go too long this will cause major problems. Some standard cars required change oil every 5000 miles or 8,047 kilometers depending on the oil. Changing oil need also changing the oil filters, this will catch dirt and debris circulating to your engine.
2. Check the cooling system
Cooling system includes radiator, water pump, thermostat and coolant. The easiest way to keep your engine from overheating is to keep you radiator fluid (coolant) at the proper level. To check the coolant level, lift the hood and look for you coolant tank. Make sure the level is over the minimum level but lower the maximum level.
3. Keep air filter clean
Air filter avoids dirt, dust, leaves and other harmful substance in getting to your engine. These filters can get clogged and needs to be replaced. If filters get dirty your engine will starved for oxygen. Replace it if necessary to keep the engine running smoothly.
4. Check for any leaks
You don't need to be a mechanic to spot oil leaks, sometimes can smell if there is a burning oil. This means that oil is leaking. Intense heat and pressure will cause damage to hoses and gaskets. When you park your car, occasionally check under the car and see if there is any leaks. If any, immediately bring your car to your most trusted mechanic.
5. Don't run fuel all the way down
Did you know that sediments from gasoline settle at the bottom of your gasoline tank? Some sediments cannot filter by fuel filters. If the sediments get through to your engine, it can cause internal damage. Some recommend keeping fuel half tank of all the times. So make sure your not running you gas all the way down.
6. Watch out for Belts
There are different types of belts and different usage. Some of their main responsibilities are running the fan, water pump, alternator and air conditioner. They eventually last for a long time, but eventually it will start to show signs of wear and begin to crack. If your belt breaks, it will cause a major problem.
7. Change spark plugs
Spark plus generate a spark to ignite the fuel and air mixture in your cylinder. So if you plugs failed your engine will not perform efficiently. Standard copper plus last up to 10,000 to 20,000 miles (16,093 to 32,187 kilometers).
